Breakwaters are designed to protect coastlines from the power of waves and drift. They also host myriads of molluscs, swaths of seaweed and the adventurous feet of the brave as they jump into the ocean. There's something both defiant and absurd in this concrete edifice and the incongruity appealed to me.
